“Although my intention was also to photograph the progress and the change that India is going through, I did not hesitate to show our shortfalls and what we were going to leave behind; to this end I wandered the length and the breath of the country photographing spaces that highlight these stark disparities. These disparities are evident and can be witnessed in metropolises and pastoral scenes. These pictures also highlight the chaos and the confusion that is inevitable when a country leapfrogs from a traditional environment to an ultra modern one, as opposed to a gradual and progressive change. “These images were photographed over a period of three years using a large format camera. I chose to photograph with a view camera, because it required deliberate patience and a clearer thought process, which in retrospect, in many cases, made me visit the sites I photographed more than just once before I finally made the picture. The surroundings we live in consume us to an extent we become numb to their uniqueness and the simple banality of the subject can be easily overlooked. I have only tried to capture this changing world around me.”
