Those slats seem to be more of a hindrance than view-augmenting frames. And for those not inside it, Evolver drastically changes the landscape: now there’s a giant wooden coil amidst the mountains and lake and sky you came to see. A successful viewing platform — like the low and sleek Skywalk at the Grand Canyon — doesn’t change the view too much.
But to hell with all that. Evolver is gorgeous, and super-clever. The spiral takes visitors on an uninterrupted, 720-degree trip. After looking at the images, I tried to visualize the way in which you’d walk through it. It wasn’t easy at first. So I made a model by forming a napkin into a coil and then bent it into shape. Checking out the overhead plans for this similar, yet concrete, spiral platform by HHF Architects helped, and even convinced me that more viewing pavilions should be shaped like this. It’s ideal for moving people in and out.
