The anti-climax of the exhibition is the last piece by Richter, a 150 cm x 150 cm mirror. While one can explain a work like this with reasons like recontextualization of everyday objects, playfulness, and irony — the usual arsenal of postmodernist rhetoric — one can’t help but feel that he is looking at a $75,000 piece of reflective glass. Then again, perhaps that’s Richter’s point: If you are willing to spend $75,000 on a mirror, then you deserve to see yourself as a work of art.
At least we can take solace that there is a Richter for each of us, waiting to be found in every branch of Home Depot.
