A singular polar bear with the legs of a human female sits, contemplative, beneath dramatically gray skies. A mass-produced image of a neon palm tree sign is recreated using seal intestines — the only parts hunters discard. Yellow dishwashing gloves pray to an “iceberg cathedral” to reverse the effects of rising temperatures. Incorporating a great deal of depth and space, the images present a stark contrast from over-industrialized nations, like Graafland’s homeland of the Netherlands, “where all the landscape seems to be dictated by human intervention.” Simultaneously humorous and unsettling, Graafland’s work is a whimsical warning in disguise.
