Bodkin — “inspired by Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock” says Hartman, who was an English major at University of Virginia — began with Hartman and former partner Samantha Pleet reworking vintage leather jackets into bags. That collaboration quickly escalated into their first ready-to-wear collection that launched last winter. Hartman, who started a column in the Washington Post called EcoWise, incorporated her interest and background in sustainable practice into what she calls “sustainable-focused” designs. However unlike many green labels, Bodkin stands out independently from “eco-fashion”. It’s a line that’s sought after for aesthetics before agenda. “I’m trying to reach those people [like my Vogue and Nylon readers, for example] and not necessarily the people who seek out an organic fashion line no matter what,” says Hartman, who felt this dynamic was missing in the eco-fashion world. We tend to agree.
