filler29 The Boombox Project     But The Boombox Project doesn’t just start and stop in New York City. It travels around the world, picking up personal explanations on how this infectious urban style spread to places like Japan, Sweden, and England. The portable stereo legend was alive all the way through the mid 1980s, and it was not only the hip-hop generation using boomboxes. Inside, you’ll see photos of a young Bruce Springsteen, David Byrne of The Talking Heads, and English punk band The Clash, each hanging out with their boombox of choice.
Besides beautiful high-resolution images of Owerko’s own collection and nostalgic quotes, The Boombox Project is steeped in technical aspects of the radio, which allowed DJs, MCs, and musicians to experiment with different techniques that eventually evolved into the new styles of music.
In the end, whether you are fortunate enough to remember the times, or are from a younger generation with great interest in a “Boombox Renaissance”, the book will leave you feeling the need to step away from the computer, head out to the streets, and connect with your peers, face to face. Maybe even start a new movement.
If you’re in New York, be sure to check out Lyle Owerkos’ photography at CLIC Gallery, From October 5–December 5.
