Good. As much as I may sound like I’m preaching or fearing a post-historic future, there’s no way we can function without these new tools. The amount of information people can access instantly is incredible. It allows us to focus on ideas and move on, rather than getting stuck at a point because we don’t know what we need to know.
Which piece are you most proud of from the past year?
One piece I’m working on right now is a vertical, totem-like piece of 12 books folded into each other. It’s a new way of combining books for me and the results have been really exciting. I’m carving all the way through, so the books become more sculptural and integrated into their surroundings. It feels like an artifact or cultural object of unknown origin from natural history.
Last question: a world without books is a world without…?
A past.
New Worlds to Conquer is on view now through January 15, 2011 at Saltworks Gallery in Atlanta.
