Let’s start at the beginning. How’d the gallery come to be and how did you go about establishing your roster of artists?
The gallery was established in 2000 in Tribeca. At the time, there were few opportunities for artists to work collectively. The gallery was initially set up as an arrangement between friends. The roster, like all other aspects of the gallery was built through these relations.
What, if anything do your artists have in common?
Initially they were all willing to make work and build shows with courage and abandon.
There’s a very makeshift, DIY quality to much of your artists’ work, is this something the gallery strives for consciously?
The gallery never had much financing so it was built by hand and out of pocket. There wasn’t much to lose, and I suppose the art mirrored some of this reality. The shows, however, were curated with intent and strategy. Most often they were a reflection of the work we were making or wanted to make.
Your artists seem to utilize everything: cardboard boxes, packing tape, glitter, acrylic, and digital video. Do you believe there should be a critical distinction between craft and fine art?
There are sympathies in all directions. Distinctions between art and craft, and politics and cooking come and go depending on context.
