jpthurlow page3 JP ThurloweWhat was the particular interest that drew you to our Vincent Gallo cover?
It stood out to me because of its ethereal quality. It has a Christ-like vibe, which is amusing given it’s Vincent Gallo, but beyond this I specifically liked the marks he made on the cover of the magazine. I wanted to recreate that. It felt like a natural fit with what I was doing. I’ve only recently seen the post you guys made in January ‘10 when you discovered the drawing but not the link back to me. I love the idea that [there was speculation] he could have made the piece, that the drawing has taken on a life of it’s own.

Do you always draw with such precision?
I try to yes. My technique has improved drastically over the course of the Covers project. I like very much the contrast between the photorealism and the subsequent defacing. Thinking about it, if Vincent Gallo had secretly come to me and asked me to ghost-draw it for him I probably would have said yes.

If you were directing a print magazine today, whom would you feature on your cover right now? Why?
Wow what a question…. The Vincent Gallo-esque answer is of course to put myself on the cover but I doubt the magazine in question would sell many units if I did! I’m drawn to androgynous imagery, but AnOther did this wonderfully with Tilda Swinton recently so I could not repeat that. Another favorite is the representation of non-mainstream masculine beauty.
