While they document dramatic devastation, these photographs remain coolly objective. Almost all are horizontal with simple, frontal perspectives that open into wide horizons. They capture the city at the scale of the landscape, focusing on more than just one property or city block. Dull, greyed-out colors gives them the static, historic feeling of old black and white photographs. That documentary aspect might be what’s most compelling about Hamboussi’s project. With many properties along the creek slated for rehabilitation and gentrification, the views he’s captured here are destined to change. And that change will be most welcome.
