Just as crucially, the DESTE Foundation has been promoting and encouraging Greek artists. Its biannual DESTE Prize honors a Greek artist living in Greece or abroad. The two Athens-born and -based artists in Skin Fruit are Christiana Soulou, whose series of delicately drawn figures in various erotic poses is one of the few refreshing surprises in the show, and Janis Varela, who is represented by a wispy collage-and-glitter drawing of a young girl in nature. There is also one work by a Cypriot-born, Haris Epaminonda, “Nemesis 52” (2003), a thirteen-minute video.
Despite these considerate inclusions, Skin Fruit offers few introductions — and nary an insight. Rather than challenging established concepts — be it of art, nature or human representation — as previous DESTE exhibitions have aimed to do, it highlights the most base aspect of art collecting: that big money can buy big art.
