How did you find the subjects for Holon, and why did you choose to photograph them?
I always had the wish to go back to nature and live there for a while, and I had a very romantic vision of that. But for me, it would be impossible to live there longer than a few weeks or months, because I’m totally dependent on technology. So I decided to find people who live in the woods, completely self-sustaining, who supply themselves through the cultivation of whole food products and live without money, electricity, and water conduit. The research took months. Sometimes I had an idea of where a person was living, and so I just went into the forest and began to search for them.

What are your upcoming projects/exhibitions?
I am planning a project in Istanbul about living in Gececondus, which is a Turkish word for a house put up quickly without proper permission — “placed (built) overnight”. In common usage, it refers to the low-cost apartment buildings or houses that were constructed in a very short time by people migrating from rural areas to the outskirts of the large cities. Such buildings…can be very densely populated. Half the residents of Istanbul — perhaps six million people — dwell in gecekondu homes.
