When you’re at the parties as a photographer, do you feel you’re less of a participant and more a voyeur? Or do you mix the two roles?
It is definitely a mix of the two roles. I would immerse myself physically while remaining an objective observer, waiting for someone or something to catch my attention, all the while making notes mentally of who I was going to photograph next. I would generally wait until later in the night when everyone was loose, and pull people in my space one at a time. It was always a collaborative effort between me and the subject; they would throw ideas out, and I would direct them as well.
Any favorite stories from your year of parties?
The first party I photographed happened to fall on my birthday. It was the Vogue Ball and was definitely one of the most extravagant and stressful, as there was quite a lot of people there, and logistically it was a lot to tackle. [But] after shooting and finally getting to sit down and decompress at about 3am, I was surprised with birthday cake and song. But honestly, every night I attended was amazing, and I have stories from every single party. I am very grateful that Ryan invited me shoot in his parties…. Thanks Ryan.
