From the ages of 2 to 5 you lived in Kenya with your father. Could you describe your memories from that period and experience of returning to the continent?

Those are my very first childhood memories; they are the very first imprints of life. For a long time I did not feel at home when we went back to the Netherlands. Holland felt like a parallel universe, whereas Kenya was the place where my ‘real’ life continued without me…coming back to Africa always fills me with joy and melancholy. It feels like coming home, but at the same time I will never fully be part of it, too…
