In 1995 he designed a simple shed structure for those left homeless by the Kobe earthquake. And now, to serve communities in Port-au-Prince, he has designed an arched tent armature and is working to secure funding for the fabrication, transport, and installation of fifty units there.
As we’re called upon more and more to respond to emergencies in different parts of the world, we’re in need of an architecture that can be deployed quickly, simply, and universally, one that’s formally rich and physically modest. Shigeru Ban is well poised to lead the way.
