Jablon contacted several key London retailers, such as Harvey Nichols and Browns, who agreed to carry the line. The business grew organically. Next, Jablon connected with several creative fashion designers, like Belgian Dries van Noten, and Japanese Yohji Yamamoto. Jablon takes a certain pride in that: “Designers like to collaborate with us because we know and love what they do. We can create a product that corresponds to their design philosophy.”
Another reason designers collaborate with Linda Farrow is to protect their brand from being exploited. “We are keenly aware of what happened in fashion in the 90s,” Jablon said “when some designers made a quick buck by over-licensing their names, and killed their brands along the way. Designers trust us not to do that. We produce and distribute the product for them, but we work hand in hand.”
Indeed, Linda Farrow’s product often outlasts the brand, like it has in the case of Belgian designer Veronique Branquinho, who closed her eponymous line last year. “We will continue to carry the Branquinho line,” Jablon said, “because it is a great product and we are proud of it. There are many customers who buy the eyeglasses without knowing who Branquinho is. In a way it’s gratifying, because they buy the product, and not the brand.”
