Tatsuro Horikawa presented a seemingly uncompromising vision of the dark, torn up, industrial landscape that is his world as the models sped down the runway to the booming soundtrack in their tough leather jackets, sometimes worn one on top of another, and waxed jeans. But beneath these lay a softer touch provided by the drapey tops and infinity cardigans. The shredded, but soft sweaters provided a perfect icon for the schizophrenic mood of the collection. Horikawa continued his forays into color by mixing the dark red and the dirty white to provide flashes of hope amid the black desperation. In the flier that accompanied the show Horikawa explained that he was inspired by the original Gothic cathedrals in Prague and other parts of Europe. His train of thought moved on to how the original Gothic style has been co-opted and left devoid of meaning by the contemporary Goth culture, especially in fashion, and that with this collection he aimed to “create a new contemporary ‘Gothic Mode.’”
