But, I refused to get involved. I do not want a big-perfume-company process, with the marketing guy telling the perfumer that he wants something that smells like J.Lo, and then the brand manager telling him that he wants it to smell like Tom Ford, and then you get something completely different from what the designer intended.”
Keeping in line with the anti-business-as-usual approach, all Six Scents perfumes are unisex. “The division of fragrances into men’s and women’s is actually a fairly recent phenomenon that arose when companies began doing all these licensing deals,” said Sorhaindo. “Historically, fragrances were never meant to be exclusively for men or women.” The desire to break stereotypes resonates with him. “I know men that sometimes feel in a soft and delicate mood and they feel that the rose, a stereotypically feminine scent, is what they want to wear. On the other hand, Damir Doma’s fragrance is very masculine and rich, but on a right woman it smells wonderful.”
So far Six Scents has been a hit and Sorhaindo is going ahead at full speed. Series Three is scheduled to launch later this year. The theme of the series is adolescence, that period of life where we go through the most tender and the most brutal experiences. Which designers are involved? We’ll find out in October.
