What about his spiritual gift, the ability to communicate with dead souls?
Uxbal is a humble street guy who has this gift… or a burden. He’s not a mystic, just a guy who has this ability. While researching the film in Spain, I met with several psychics. I had three or four interviews that really made the hair on my hands stand. They were serious people, not interested at all in money or recognition. And they are not those people with rooms full of candles. Some of them are primitive on the intellectual level, and others are very smart. But you can feel when something is real, and I was really impressed. And the bad news is, life doesn’t end with death. It’s just a start of another, painful journey, and that’s when you just say, “Fuuuuck!”
Do you believe in god?
I am of two minds about God. I do think that there is something out there. It’s hard for me to explain. I don’t believe there is somebody. God of the conception is such a force, it’s more like a state of mind, like consciousness; sometimes I have experienced it or sensed it or felt something beyond my understanding. I truly believe there is a being that is out there that we cannot portray. It’s a matter of quietness, of silence. That exists.
