Olympia, Washington’s LOTT Clean Water Alliance building replaces the former wastewater treatment center that occupied the same site. Completed last summer, the new facility continues to maintain the water quality of its community, as is the objective of any such operation. But not every sewage plant can boast of generating energy from the methane gas emitted by the waste it treats. Most plants are hardly aesthetic marvels either, unlike this striking building, conceived by the Miller Hull Partnership’s design team. The plan’s strategy of improving the onsite environment suggests some new possibilities for revivifying blighted industrial land.
