Art January 31, 2011 By Jennifer Pappas

Since his early days in New York, Scharf hasn’t missed a beat, exploding into 2011 with dual exhibitions at New York’s Paul Kasmin Gallery. NATURAFUTURA features new large-scale works composed in, and inspired by the clash of nature and catastrophe in Bahia Brazil, while THREE DOZEN! presents an obvious number of Scharf’s trademark floating donut works. His new work charges through the same bold, hyperbole-driven, pop-surrealist terrain he’s been perfecting for decades, culminating in two pieces from NATURAFUTURA that address BP’s now infamous nightmare of a spill. “Oil Painting” (pun intended) and “Aquaviva” — both underwater scenes — are indicative of Scharf’s ongoing social activism and concern for the world we’re living in.

As if that weren’t enough, Scharf recently completed a new mural at the corner of Bowery and Houston; will be wielding his spray cans on 100 storefront shutters throughout New York City for the Gatescapes Project; and will be featured in the LA MOCA’s upcoming Art in the Streets exhibit this spring.

NATURAFUTURA and THREE DOZEN! run from January 27-February 26 at Paul Kasmin’s Chelsea locations in New York.
