Art, Greenspace December 21, 2011 By Jordan Sayle

fk map Fresh Inspiration for Energy and Art     Registration begins on January 1 for entries into the 2012 LAGI competition. The initiative, which was developed with the goal of creating large scale works of art that also function as sources of clean energy, will once again invite designers, artists, and architects from various disciplines to propose plans for constructing an installation that is equally ambitious both aesthetically and technologically. Three hundred acres of the park have been set aside for the initiative, represented by the shaded area in the map shown above. Plans can be drawn that incorporate any 100 acres within that designated space, contiguous or not. Contestants have six months to submit their designs, and a $20,000 prize winner will be announced next fall.
PLANET’s readers may recall learning about the winning entry in the 2010 contest, Lunar Cubit, which was devised for a site in Abu Dhabi. Though there’s no guarantee that that blueprint will ever be brought to reality and the same goes for the eventual 2012 victor, the contribution that’s arguably even more valuable than a physical structure is the initiative’s exploration of the possible and its success in motivating bright minds from around the world to share their artistic visions for a sustainable future.
