kl 3 Kalpesh LathigraWhen I first came to America I felt welcomed and free. All the cliches of immigrants making it here rang true – it felt like a natural home. Being the son of immigrants I guess I am drawn to them here. Obviously people are initially thrown by an Indian who speaks with a Cockney British accent, but it usually works in my favor – people are caught off guard and generally open and receptive to my lens.

How do you find inspiration for your personal projects, and how do you arrive at the ideas?
I think we are all storytellers, it’s what binds us as human beings. As a child my father instilled in me a love of books which has stayed with me. Ideas come from reading, newspapers, books, articles. If a news story catches my eye I research it. If it resonates with me then I begin. For me, its important to think out of the box and make brave decisions. As a photographer, I constantly remind myself why I am taking photographs, who is my audience and are my ideas strong enough to transcend across all the different platforms.

Your work seems to have running through it the theme of the uninhabited space, perhaps once inhabited. Is this a deliberate theme or a something that stems from a more subconscious area?
Regarding space, I am unsure. One of the greatest things about photography is the large number and variety of people I meet, but the moments are ultimately fleeting. Perhaps it’s the emotional resonance of the space that I am trying to record……
