ic 3 INNER COURSE Entering the space, visitors first encountered The Waiting Room, a long, narrow space with benches on either side, two sculptures set in the middle, and a Secretary at the end of the room behind a kiosk. Visitors were served a questionnaire to fill out while they awaited their appointment. When the time for their appointment arrived, a knock would come from the other side of a closed door. Visitors were then ushered into the Softing Chamber.

At this point, it became clear to most that the experience they had entered was decidedly other than that of a standard Chelsea gallery. Two radium bulbs illuminated a dark space denuded of accoutrements save a red satin bed, and a single performer, the Softer. Each Softer embodied a different style, but the intent remained the same: to relax the visitor, round their edges, begin to collapse the physical, mental, and emotional barriers we hold around ourselves; bring whomever had entered the room from the life outside, closer to the world within. Most people entered this space guarded, if not terrified; most all left it in a deep state of joy.
