Through it all, Wheeler wisely leaves polemical musings aside and instead relies on the thoughts of other writers, which she continually references, and the observations of the researchers that she visits in the field. Ten years after the publication of Terra Incognita, her reports from the Antarctic, she has found a location that faces even graver threats and has, perhaps, even more impactful lessons to reveal. Much of the Arctic’s history has yet to be written. But in addition to looking toward the region’s complicated past, Wheeler gives us a snapshot of its ever-evolving present.
