Mark Ruffalo as “Father Joe” in SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS.
It was disheartening for a long period of time. No one bought any movies out of Sundance that year and so many other distribution houses had closed. The media was talking about the end of independent cinema in America, and so you’re like “Not now! Please, not now! We just won Sundance. We won the jury prize at Sundance!”
Your character in the movie is a priest and becomes conflicted with his choices. He has dedicated himself to raise money to build this great homeless shelter on skid row but ends up taking advantage of Dean. Was it really selfless?
You know, it’s an interesting modern dilemma. Can you really have that kind of charity in a capitalist culture? Even the best-intended non-profits, people still expect to get a cash break from them. People still want their name on a building. They still want something in return. And, the dilemma that he’s in, is he has to sell something, even though what he is doing is purely giving. And I think that’s an interesting thing to think about today.
