A plaster mold of a Carolina Parakeet sits on a stand in artist Todd McGrain's studio near Ovid, New York. from The Lost Bird Project
The Lost Bird Project is a different kind of road-trip movie: it follows artist Todd McGrain as he travels to the modern-day habitats of five extinct birds and attempts to install his own oversized bronze sculptures of the vanished species. McGrain seeks to memorialize the birds with their likeness, but also to inform and work with the communities living on the land now. However, serious though the work may be, The Lost Bird Project is laced with the kind of comic pitfalls that every installation artist dreads.
