Director Marshall Curry by Bill Gallagher
It was a feeling of desperation that led a Tunisian fruit vendor to set fire to himself at this time last year, sparking the fuse for the Arab Spring that followed. And under different circumstances, Occupy protestors in the United States are desperate to have their voices heard. If there are any lessons to be transferred from the lawless culmination of the fervor over ecological conflicts from over a decade ago, Curry believes it is awareness of the frustration that can set in when people feel that their concerns are disregarded or met with hostility. Protesters were pepper sprayed in Eugene too, after all. In part because the radical group that emerged from those skirmishes was ultimately very small in scope and was strongly rejected by the mainstream environmental movement, the film conveys the sense that the fanaticism could possibly have been avoided if only someone had cared to listen.
