Many people are saying things like “this is a group of guys who came out of nowhere,” but you’ve all been in the music scene for some time. Could you talk about the evolution of creating Caveman?
It all happened pretty naturally. I got a call on the phone one day from Matt after our old bands had broken up, saying he was thinking we should start a new one. I was excited because I’d always loved playing music with him and Jimmy (who’d played with Matt in their old band). I basically just couldn’t wait for us to get in a room and see what happened. That’s when I really got to know Jeff and Sam, who I’d known more peripherally before, and I am a much happier man for it.
Where did the name Caveman come from?
I think the inspiration for the name was a temporary nickname Matt had received based on one day when he’d shown up looking particularly manly. At this point, it’s hard to say what really made the name stick. It’s got a snap to it we all seemed to like.
Did you guys all know each other from the New York/Brooklyn scene? And what caused you guys to leave the other bands behind and start Caveman?
All of our other projects ended right as we got this band together. We knew each other from a lot of time spent collectively hanging out at bars and guitar shops around the city.
How would you say you’ve all moved on creatively from your former bands?
I don’t want to put words in the other guys’ mouths, but I think one
