Complex, brilliant, Sontag was a force of nature. During her life, she published four novels and several plays, wrote and directed four feature-length films, staged a production of Waiting for Godot in 1993 Sarajevo as bombs were falling, and gave us seminal essays on photography, AIDS, style, and the aesthetic of camp. Still, it wasn’t enough. Interviewed at seventy, she says she has “absolutely not” achieved her desires, and is looking forward to more adventure. Within two years, she was dead. We can only imagine what else she might have produced.
